Position Description
Job Summary
Under limited supervision, through lived experience, as a recipient or former recipient of services, this person will provide expertise, offer hope and motivation by drawing from their own employment experiences and resiliency to encourage other individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to seek and maintain employment and community integration.

Minimum Requirements
Current or former recipients of services with a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) (or equivalent certificate from the Occupational Course of Study) is required for this position. Prior work experience in any capacity is required. Peer Support Specialist Certification Required.

Other Skills and Requirements
Must be willing to become certified in CPR/First Aid. Must possess a valid NC Driver’s License.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Promote self-determination, recovery, self-advocacy, and self-direction.

Assist individuals in identifying strengths; wellness goals; setting objectives, and identifying barriers.

Attend treatment team meetings with individual to promote the use of self-directed advocacy tools.

Assist with teaching individuals techniques for developing or rewriting PCPs how to ask for appropriate services in community.

Support the individual through the employment planning process.

Engage and outreach to individuals in other programs and services to encourage employment.

Model advocacy skills for disclosure issues or requesting job accommodations.

Teach wellness management strategies and self-management plans/tools to use in the workplace and in their personal lives.

Develop network of support groups in the community to learn from other peers. Seek to promote hope, ability to problem solve through work situations, and the initiative to decrease social isolation.

Provide education to other team ESP (Employment Support Professionals) to assist in understanding of self-advocate and peer support roles.

Promote a culture in which an individuals’ points of view and preferences are recognized, understood, respected, and integrated into service.

Provide resources and teaching transportation skills as necessary to secure employment.

Share their own personal story to model how to choose, get, and keep meaningful employment.

Support individuals to make informed decisions about supported employment and build community connections.

Support the vocational choices individuals make and support them in overcoming job-related concerns and building social skills in the community that will enhance job acquisition and tenure.

Follow VR and ADVP regulations and guidelines for supported employment.

Ensure that standards are maintained.

Operate various types of equipment including copier, calculator, computer, etc.

Adhere to the principles of the LIFESPAN ChOICES Training Curriculum.

Maintain individuals’ confidentiality at all times.

Represent LIFESPAN in a positive manner.

Abide by, enforce and participate in the implementation and ongoing oversight of all LIFESPAN safety standards and regulations.
